Bolcom: Canciones de Lorca & Prometheus (Live)

The literary side of William Bolcom in a collection of songs scored to the poems by Federico García Lorca and Lord Byron. Born in 1938, William Bolcom is filled with surrealistic humor, passion, wisdom, mystery, and the Andalusian flamenco tradition that beat in his ancestral blood. These songs received their premiere in 2006 with Plácido Domingo and in this recording feature the tenor René Barbera accompanied by Jeffrey Biegel on piano. The Pacific Symphony & Chorale add depth to the arrangement set to Lord Byrons Prometheus.

Soloists: René Barbera, tenor; Jeffrey Biegel, piano
Conductor: Carl St. Clair
Pacific Symphony & Chorale

Reviews

“…”with an excellent tenor, René Barbera, who gives a beautiful, clear-voiced account of the vocal line.”
–Richard S. Ginell, Classical Voice North America, APRIL 7, 2016

“Both works serve to remind us that Bolcolm remains vital. The disk shimmers with the sounds of a fully matured master of his vocal and orchestral resources, a sound poet who has grown and made of his music a most distinct amalgam that combines what is “in the air” today with an inspired immediacy. Brilliant!”
–Grego Applegate Edwards, ClassicalModernMusic.Blogspot.com, March 9, 2016

“Striking contemporary songs and choral work with orchestra make for a compelling musical experience.” –Mel Martin, Audiophile Audition, June 6, 2016
