On December 12 at the Philharmonie Luxembourg and on December 13 at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, René Barbera stars alongside soprano Maria Agresta, mezzo-soprano Daniela Barcellona, and bass Vitalij Kowaljow in Rossini’s elegant Stabat Mater. Gustavo Gimeno conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Wiener Singverein.
Composed late in his career after retiring from the composition of opera, Stabat Mater was commissioned by a Spanish cleric. In 1832 Rossini began composing the work, but it was not ready for a performance that year, so he asked a fellow composer, Giovanni Tadolini, to finish it. A few years later, Rossini returned to the piece and composed the four missing sections. The full score was performed and received great success in 1842 in Paris.
