American tenor René Barbera will continue his dazzling streak of house and role debuts in the 2018-2019 season. The rising star, whose voice has been described by Die Welt as a “bright, open-topped tenor,” will make appearances in Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Rome, Milan, Geneva, Minneapolis, and more this season.
Barbera says, “I’m so grateful to continue my streak of house debuts, and to debut new roles this season in Maria Stuarda and Anna Bolena. I’m excited to work with so many outstanding colleagues, and can’t wait to get started with rehearsals and performances.”
Barbera’s season will open September 29-October 6, 2018 with a house debut at Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna) as Ernesto in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale. Of his most recent performances of the role, Financial Times praised his “impressively burnished tone as Ernesto” and Opera News commended his interpretation as “distilled to perfection.” The creative team and cast includes conductor Evelino Pidò, director Irina Brook, baritone Ambrogio Maestri, baritone Gabriel Bermúdez, and soprano Andrea Carroll.
Performances in Amsterdam follow as he makes his house debut as Il Conte Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Dutch National Opera November 10-December 2, 2018. The new staging by Lotte de Beer will be conducted by Maurizio Benini with choreography by Zack Winokur, and sets and costumes by Julian Crouch. During his last performances of the role in Paris, Olyrix remarked, “The public offered him such a long round of applause that the music did not resume until the tenor greeted these demonstrations of enthusiasm.”
On December 6, 2018, Barbera sings in a one-night-only concert performance of Maria Stuarda at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees (Paris). He will sing his role debut of the Earl of Leicester across from mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato under the baton of Speranza Scappucci.
A return to Deutsche Oper Berlin begins Barbera’s new year, and he will sing Elvino in La Sonnambula January 26-February 10, 2019. Of his last performances of the role, The Washington Post praised his characterization, saying, “René Barbera found the character’s inner appeal, with an assured, warm voice, lusty high Cs, and a stage presence evoking familiar tenor tropes.” In a brilliant collaboration with set and costume designer Anna Viebrock, Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito will adapt their 2012 production originally devised for Staatsoper Stuttgart.
A one-night-only performance of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor at Deutsche Oper Berlin follows on February 15, 2019.
Making his Opera Roma house debut after previously singing with the company at Terme di Caracalla, he will perform his role debut as Riccardo Percy in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena. The new production directed by Andrea De Rosa will take place February 20-March 1, 2019. Only the third time the opera will have been performed in the company’s history, the production also stars Carmela Remigio and Alex Esposito, and will be conducted by Riccardo Frizza.
Having sung a European tour of Verdi’s Requiem with Riccardo Chailly and the Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala in early 2018, Barbera will undertake another tour of the masterful piece under the baton of firebrand conductor Teodor Currentzis with MusicAeterna The tour, March 22-April 6, 2019, will cover Paris, Brussels, Cologne, Hamburg, Vienna, and Geneva.
Barbera will then return to North America for three performances of the Verdi Requiem May 17-19, 2019 with the Minnesota Orchestra. Conductor Edward Gardner leads the all-star cast with soprano Ailyn Pérez, mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong, and bass-baritone Eric Owens.

Barbera will return to Teatro alla Scala (Milan) September 10-27, 2019 to sing Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore. Of his performances in St. Louis in the same role, Opera News praised his artistry, noting, “The cast’s standout was René Barbera, a sweet, ardent, clarion-voiced Nemorino, and the afternoon’s musical highlight was ‘Una furtiva lagrima’…The ovation that followed was not only a recognition of Barbera’s superb rendition but a celebration of Nemorino’s victory in love.”
