with the Minnesota Orchestra, under the baton of Edward Gardner. Barbera will share the stage with a sparkling roster of artists including soprano Ailyn Pérez, mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong, bass-baritone Eric Owens, plus the Minnesota Chorale.

René Barbera makes his highly anticipated role debut in the title role of Mozart’s Idomeneo
at Teatro Massimo in Palermo. With production by Pier Luigi Pizzi, Daniel Cohen conducts the Teatro Massimo Orchestra and Chorus. Of the work, Mr. Cohen says: "This score is a unique marvel of its kind – adds Mozart at the age of 25, his way of using the orchestra, especially the wind section, with surprising modernity".

"The Texan tenor has performed from the West Coast to The Met, drawing praise for "his easy delivery and fine legato" and his "perfect timbre" for Rossini's Count Almaviva. Barbera has made a number of significant debuts at European houses in recent years and, with some more debuts scheduled in Europe this season, he has relocated to Berlin and took time to answer some questions about the challenges ahead.
"Nearly a decade ago, just before completing his studies in the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute at UNCSA, tenor René Barbera emerged as one of five winners in the Grand Finals Concert of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and he secured an apprenticeship in the prestigious Merola Opera Program of San Francisco Opera. In 2011, he would also win first prize for opera, first prize for zarzuela (Spanish operetta) and the audience prize at the World Opera Competition, Operalia."
