For his final engagement of the season, René Barbera stars as Alfredo in a new production of Verdi’s La Traviata at the Festival Castell Peralda in Spain. Of the production, the director and stage designer, Paco Azorín, says that it presents the protagonist Violetta “as a free woman; a free spirit way beyond a superficial or stereotypical view. A woman who doesn’t need advice or protection to be herself at all times, to enjoy the life she wants to lead and to love Alfredo with complete freedom.”
Performances take place on August 5 & 7 at the Castle Gardens Auditorium. Mr. Barbera shares the stage with a gripping cast, including Russian soprano Ekaterina Bakanova as Violetta, and American baritone Quinn Kelsey as Giorgio Germont. The Cor Intermezzo returns to the festival alongside the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu led by conductor Riccardo Frizza. Ulises Mérdia has designed the contemporary style costumes, with lighting design by Albert Faura.
